The original design is frequently described as an innovative and revolutionary piece of architecture. It was the world's first integrated airport building, combining all necessary functions for an airport terminal in a single structure. It was also the world’s first circular passenger terminal, and featured telescopic canopies that radiated out from the building to the aircraft, for which its designer Frank Hoar filed a patent. The building was awarded Grade II Listed status in 1996. The Beehive served as the headquarters of GB Airways from 2000 until the sale of the airline in 2008. In July 2009, the building officially re-opened offering high quality, serviced offices.
