BGI pulls their way to victory over MH Bland in aid of GBC Open Day

If you were down at the Piazza on Tuesday 13th December at 5 o’clock and wondered what all the excitement and noise was about, it was the 2nd Tug of War held between staff members at Bland Group International (BGI) and MH Bland (MHB). After a twelve month wait, both companies were ready for the challenge; MHB to retain and BGI to win the title.

BGI is best known for Blands Travel (DMC), The Rock Hotel, Gibair and OSG. MHB is responsible for the Cable Car, MHB Port Agency, MHB Marine Services and MHB Travel Services. Both operate a fleet of mini buses, BGI as Blands Travel and MHB as Calypso Tours. Now that has been cleared up, back to the Tug of War!

The aim of the event was to raise money for GBC Open Day and enjoy a sociable afternoon with family and friends. There were 3 teams, ladies, gentlemen and a mixed team, each with 8 staff members. Each team had the best of 3 pulls. However, in all cases it never got to that stage. After two pulls the MHB ladies managed to secure the first win. This was followed by a clean win by the BGI men. The pressure was palpable and both teams were only a pull away from victory.

It all came down to the efforts of the mixed team. Both sides dug deep. After what seemed an eternity, BGI managed to take the lead. The teams regrouped for the decisive second pull regardless of their tired legs and arms. All eyes and ears were on Paul Lyon the umpire, waiting for him to shout PULL!! Despite a big effort on behalf of MHB, BGI pulled their way to a Victorious win! Both teams have now got one victory under their belt so it is all to play for in 2017.

The presentation of the coveted trophy changed hands from MHB to BGI outside Cloister Building. This was followed by both companies joining forces for the Mannequin Challenge. The whole event was filmed by GBC and was shown as part of the GBC 2016 Open Day.

In total the event raised £793 for GBC Open Day. Both companies would like to thank Paul Lyon for keeping order and ensuring that everyone was safe and well behaved. Also a big thank you to The Rock Hotel, Stagnetto’s and Saccone & Speed for providing refreshments and food for after the event. Their generosity and support are much appreciated.
